"For what it’s worth, I don’t like Bitch Lab, I don’t read her, I don’t think she’s very bright, and I think the main thing she piggybacked on recently was a comment thread to a post she didn’t author. Nice appropriation, that. ... Don’t like Bitch Lab? Join the club, and don’t read her. Read the women she rips off instead. They’re better." - Ilyka Damen

Okaaaaay?
I disagree with you slightly —
I don’t think it was up to the bloggers to say, “Gee, our past writings might be a liability for your campaign.” Because 1) presumeably they want the gig and aren’t going to cock it up, and 2) they might have viewed it as a non-issue, since these were their personal blogs and whatever they wrote there was separate from their work for the campaign as staffers.
I see it as a failure on the part of the Edwards Campaign people, and, ultimately, Edwards himself.
The Edwards campaign staff should’ve been thoroughly familiar with the bloggers’ work. Or “vetted”, as seems to be the popular phrase.
oh, I agree with you SD. in the ideal world, they would have vetted, which means you don’t disagree on the point about it being their personal writing.
it’s politics. personal life is up for grabs. naive to think otherwise,
But after I thought about, I realized that the biggest problem with all this is what I described above. People who don’t blog don’t get it.
And, I’m a small business owner. I give pitches. I go in and educate my potential employer, however temporary he or she might be. and that’s exactly what a gig workig for a campaign is, much like an independent consultant.
They would have been worth their weight in gold to the campaisng to not just be bloggers, but *advisors*.
What I’m saying is: they never should have treated it like a job interview. I wouldn’t. And I wouldn’t have cared about any of it. If I believe in a candidate and I know the dangerous field out there, then it would be my obligation to do what i had to do to make the candidate win.
That would mean that, if my blog might be the center of controversy, then I am going to be upfront because, while a potential liability, my point is: it never had to be. See, in the marketing and PR biz there’s one thing that holds true: no news is bad news, bad news is news.
In other words, it’s better to be in the spotlight over a stink like this, then to have nothing going on.
personally, if I thought they were all smart people, I would have guessed they’d have planned it. Knowing what I do: I would have.
You also have to understand that I worked for a famous person (in his realm) for five years. This crap is old hat: scandals are to your advantage. Work ‘em and don’t lose your head while they’re happening.
This pitch would have been a freakin’ piece of cake. I’m tellin ya.
Edwards turned out to not lookg like a fool and Amanda, especially, had power. If he didn’t listen to her and didnt hire her, she only had to go back to her blog and write about how they were fools.
