For what it’s worth, I don’t like Bitch Lab, I don’t read her, I don’t think she’s very bright, and I think the main thing she piggybacked on recently was a comment thread to a post she didn’t author. Nice appropriation, that.

So: Don’t like Bitch Lab? Join the club, and don’t read her. Read the women she rips off instead. They’re better.

Just go ahead and bitch

    I. Had. No. Idea.

In Canada, we get a year partially paid by the gov, with top-ups by some employers. My guy and I took two years, one each, but we were both guaranteed our jobs while on leave.

I cannot believe that you don’t get to spend risk-free time (free from the risk of losing your job or not being able to feel your kids) during a very crucial stage in the health of your kids and in their need for parental bonding and all that jazz.

I am just shaking my head at this. I’m actually at a loss for words! And all this time I thought you lived in a civilized country.

Uh, I was so shocked I wrote “feel your kids” instead of “feed your kids.” Although I guess it’s handy to be able to feel your kids too from time to time, in an affectionate sorta way.

The only other industrialized country which does not have paid maternity or parental leave for women, Australia, guarantees a full year of unpaid leave to all women in the country. In contrast, the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) in the U.S. provides only 12 weeks of unpaid leave to approximately half of mothers in the U.S. and nothing for the remainder

The trick with this one is that, in practice, they don’t actually have to guarantee you a job after that 12 months.

    Isn’t that sneaky?
