"For what it’s worth, I don’t like Bitch Lab, I don’t read her, I don’t think she’s very bright, and I think the main thing she piggybacked on recently was a comment thread to a post she didn’t author. Nice appropriation, that. ... Don’t like Bitch Lab? Join the club, and don’t read her. Read the women she rips off instead. They’re better." - Ilyka Damen

Oh, no! I am devastated. Iris was a friend of mine, and not particularly old. If she was ill I had not heard, but I had let myself get out of touch. The last time I saw her was at a demonstration (of course), probably one of the anti-Iraq war demos. She was a wonderful person and one of few scholars, along with Nancy Fraser and Patricia Mann, to effectively deploy the insights of postmern feminism without losing her grip on Marxist analysis or intelligible writing. Her work on justice is truly original and very important, much better than (although impossible without) the work of Rawls or Habermas because it is grounded in real world experiences and actual politics. She’s not replaceable. We cannot afford to lose people like this!
This is quite tragic (Young did indeed pass away quite young, though apparently had been struggling with cancer for the past year and a half). Thanks, though, for the very nice summary of her remarkable career.
Martha McCaughey has a similar strain of analysis. I used Iris Marion Young a lot in my dissertation - I was under an impression that she was British!
I also looked forward to hearing more from Iris Marion Young. I was fortunate to be able to attend a lecture she delivered last year, and I found her moral about vision very clear and compelling - inspiring, actually. I was very much looking forward to reading her work as that vision continued to develop. I think your posts are a good tribute to her work, B|L.
