Not many people out there are familiar with the Combahee River Collective. The black women who came together in 1974 to form the Collective got fed up with the racism of white women and the sexism of black men. They knew that no one could speak for black women but black women on the interlocking cruelties of racism, sexism and classism that American society perpetuated on black people. Black women still know that we and white women must still work together to fight the many-headed American-hydra that seeks to destroy all that stand in its way. Black women also know that they must join forces with other women of color to continue the true merging of “sisterly solidarity” that seems so fleeting to the coming together of all women of the world.
